BHS economics teams form at last minute, but win state contests
Two Brainerd High School teams won the Minnesota State Economics Challenge in two divisions recently and each went on to compete in regionals. "It's incredible," said BHS economics teacher David Stark. "Everything in this competition is incredibly close. We also won the state championship two years ago." Stark rounded up several high school seniors in his economics classes in April whom he thought would be interested and successful in the Economics Challenge, a program of the Minnesota Council of Economics Education. None of the students had competed in the challenge before. Brainerd team members who won state on the Advanced Placement economics team were Eric Blum, Kirstin Dunham, C.J. Eisler and Marie Lange. Winning the at-large economics division from Brainerd were Will Frank, Paul Klapperich, Kai Kottmann and Adrienne Larsen. Brainerd had three teams compete April 17 at St. Cloud State University, but only two of the three teams won the competition to advance to the state division. Both these teams won the state championship April 25 at the University of Minnesota. The Brainerd teams then competed in regional competition April 27 in Minneapolis against teams from Arkansas, Kansas, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska and Texas. Both Brainerd teams took second in this competition. Texas won to advance to New York City for the national championship May 17. Kottmann said his team was only one second away from winning the regional division. He said the team had the answer to the oral question in the final round, but was not fast enough to hit the buzzer. The question was: "Using a supply and demand graph, which line will shift if the cost of the production changes?" The answer is "supply." Kottmann, an exchange student from Germany, wanted to participate in the economics challenge because he wanted to be involved in as many activities as possible while at Brainerd High School. ."We had no idea on what to expect," Kottmann said. "But first place sure feels good." Kottmann said his father was a banker and he saw at a young age how economics class connects with the global economy. He said he does not want to pursue economics as a career, but it will help him in his personal life. Blum said he felt really good about the competition and was even more pleased to |

beat the Edina School District in the state division. He said it was down to Edina and Brainerd with the question, "What is the current national unemployment rate?" The answer is 5.8 percent. "This was the dream question for us," said Blum. "We cracked numbers all the way down (to the university). We were like, 'Did he really ask that?'" Brainerd buzzed in and beat Edina for the state championship. Eisler said defeating Edina was impressive since Edina is a big school district in the state that had been practicing since February. The Brainerd teams were not formed until two days before the competition Eisler wanted to be part of the challenge to test his own knowledge in economics, as well as to see how the Brainerd team would do. He said the challenge also was practice for the AP economics test Eisler will have to take May 15. Eisler has always been interested in finance and plans to major in it this fall in college. He said it is interesting how economics applies to the real world. Blum enjoys his Advanced Placement micro and macro economics classes because he can see how economics play out in the real world. "You learn it in class and then you can see it when you turn on the TV," he said. "I live the connection." Blum said his father was a stockbroker and the family watched a lot of television on CNN. But it was not until this school year that Blum's interest in economics peaked. He said it is fun for him to watch the stock market and predict what will happen. Blum was intrigued to participate in the economics challenge. "I wanted to see how our (Brainerd) AP classes stack up with other districts," Blum said. "It is nice to see that what they (teachers) teach us is above others. The teachers here really know what they're doing." |
